Today’s post is super exciting because I can share an awesome opportunity I was able to be a part of! Callie Bundy — an IFBB Bikini Pro Fitness Athlete/Model in Connecticut reached out to me regarding some beauty topics! Callie is also the online Editor for FitnessRXwomen.com which has over 2 million likes on Facebook! I have had the privilege with working with Callie before doing some fun beauty stuff! She reached out asking if I was interesting in being a part of her online segment “On Deck With Callie” on how to detox your makeup!
Of course I was thrilled! Today she has posted the article and I wanted to share with you today!! You can find this direct article HERE – On Deck With Callie .. but I will post down below as well :)
A while back, I had gone home to visit my family. I slept over, and while getting ready in my mom’s bathroom, my mom walked in while I was putting my mascara on. She asked me what kind of mascara I was using, adding, “because that goes right into your bloodstream, so if it’s toxic you could be poisoning yourself with it.”
I stared at it for a minute and realized I had never considered that. How foolish! Of course it made sense (thank you, Mom!), because you’re not only what you eat, BUT you’re also what you absorb! Your skin is largest organ in your body and much of what you put on it ends up in your body.
From that day forward, I became much more aware of my everyday makeup. I don’t drive myself crazy with it, but I look at it like food— if it’s something I am going to be eating every day, I want to make sure it’s the right stuff! It’s the same with my makeup— if I am going to be using it every day, I want to make sure it’s not doing me more harm than good.
I reached out to beauty and lifestyle blogger Desiree Savo on how to navigate your way through the organic makeup aisles, as well as her product recommendations at all different price ranges. Here’s what she had to say!
What are organic/natural/toxin-free products?
When you buy beauty products that are organic or natural, you are purchasing products that are made and manufactured without toxins or harmful pesticides. The term “organic” is a grey area with cosmetics, because companies often misuse the term and label their products as such without being true. They do this so they can charge more being the fact they are claiming to be natural and toxin-free. That’s exactly why reading the labels and looking for harmful ingredients is very important! Knowing what ingredients to look for can really tell you if the product is truly organic or not.
What ingredients should you avoid when buying beauty products?
Some of the many products you should avoid while purchasing beauty products are: parabens, BHA and BHT, and DEA and TEA, and formaldehyde. These are just few of many products that are harmful and are contributors to specific health issues in women and men. If you are shopping for products, don’t always believe the sales person who is telling you it’s an all-natural product; research is very important!
A few key ingredients to avoid: diethanolamine, monoethanolamine, triethanolamine, imidazolidinyl, aluminum, parabens, para-aminobenzoic acid, phenoxyethanol.
What are some cosmetic brands that are natural?
Pure & True
These are just some of the products I know to be wonderful brands! The trendiest brand would be Tarte Cosmetics, which is my favorite! Tarte’s products are unlike any other natural product I have used before.
Here’s a scenario; it’s kind of like food if you think about it. Let’s say, organic makeup would be the equivalent to eating a salad. Non-organic makeup would be the equivalent to eating a cupcake. The junky stuff is what makes the cupcake taste good, just like the junky stuff in makeup is what makes it super pigmented, creamy and everything we love about cosmetics. The cupcake tastes delicious, right? But, is it good for you and your body? Not even a little bit. That’s why Tarte Cosmetics is my favorite because it’s the best of both worlds. The other brands are amazing as well. I have used them and heard great things about them!
